Woodpecker & Kestrel Class Educational Visit - Friday 8th October.

As part of Woodpeckers and Kestrel Classes topic this term of ‘Harvest’, we have arranged for an educational visit on Friday 8th October to Hundred River Farm at Sotterley, which is a beautiful family run farm and maize maze. The trip aims to embrace younger children’s fascination with the natural world, through exploring creativity and learning about the important themes of our ecological and natural environment.

The trip aims to embrace younger children’s fascination with the natural world, through exploring creativity and learning about the important themes of our ecological and natural environment, including:

  • Habitats - Identifying common wild and garden plants, flowers and trees;
  • Wildlife - Learning about local animals in their habitats and how to care for them;
  • Walks - Enjoying fresh air while exploring the nature and habitats found around the farm ;
  • Science - Experiments on the farm to learn about the importance of soil, pollinators and life-cycles;
  • Food - Understanding where our food comes from and how to grow your own;

The positive affects of outdoor learning and engagement in nature can also help with:
Increased physical activity and combat the long-term negative impact of childhood obesity and attention disorders;

  • Improved mental health, social and community engagement;
  • Enable healthier lifestyle choices and increases awareness of the environmental implications of our diet;
  • Encourage social interactions, risk management for self and others, team building and developing characteristics such as empathy, trust and resilience;
