We use the White Rose Maths programme to plan and deliver lessons. The White Rose scheme of learning follows a sequential, logical order to teaching maths. For example, addition is taught before multiplication and shape is taught before fractions. This enables pupils to have a good basis before learning about a topic. Lessons are taught in blocks throughout with every year group first learning about place value.

Number skills and reasoning are an important part of being a successful mathematician. Adding and subtracting numbers mentally, doubling and halving numbers and a rapid recall of times tables is crucial.

By the end of Year 4, pupils should know all the multiplication facts up to 12×12 and should be able to answer a times table question within 6 seconds. Pupils are tested through a computer based assessment in year 4.

• Year 1:  Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10
• Year 2: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
• Year 3: Recall and use multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
• Year 4: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplications tables up to 12×12.
• Year 5 & 6: Revision of all multiplication tables and division facts up to 12×12.
