Maths

At Phoenix St. Peter Academy, we conduct a mastery approach to mathematics which includes becoming fluent in an area of maths as well as the opportunity to problem solve and reason. Being fluent in a particular area means being able to consistently answer questions relating to that skill in lots of various ways. Once a pupil is fluent in a skill, they can apply their knowledge to problem solving tasks and reasoning. Reasoning includes being able to justify answers, spotting and correcting errors and showing a deeper understanding.

White Rose Maths

We use the White Rose Maths programme to plan and deliver lessons. The White Rose scheme of learning follows a sequential, logical order to teaching maths. For example, addition is taught before multiplication and shape is taught before fractions. This enables pupils to have a good basis before learning about a topic. Lessons are taught in blocks throughout with every year group first learning about place value.

White Rose have also provided home learning videos and tasks which can be found at the link below:

Number Skills

Number skills and reasoning are an important part of being a successful mathematician. Adding and subtracting numbers mentally, doubling and halving numbers and a rapid recall of times tables is crucial.

You can support your child by helping them to practise these skills. A detailed list of maths skills for each year group can be found at the link below:

Times Tables

By the end of Year 4, pupils should know all the multiplication facts up to 12×12 and should be able to answer a times table question within 6 seconds. Pupils are tested through a computer based assessment in year 4.

  • Year 1:  Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10
  • Year 2: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
  • Year 3: Recall and use multiplication facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
  • Year 4: Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplications tables up to 12×12.
  • Year 5 & 6: Revision of all multiplication tables and division facts up to 12×12.
