Swimming Competency

Swimming is a national curriculum requirement for every child and helps to ensure that they are safe around water, as well as keeping fit and healthy both physically and mentally.

The are 3 requirements for swimming and water safety are that by the end of key stage 2 pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke

  • perform a safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Each year, our current Year 4 pupils swim for the whole of the academic year in order to become competent in the 3 requirements of swimming. Sadly, due to Covid, the Year 4 pupils during 2020/2021 have been unable to swim and so we hope that they will do so in Year 5, during the 2021/2022 academic year.
