Swimming Competency

Swimming is a national curriculum requirement for every child and helps to ensure that they are safe around water, as well as keeping fit and healthy both physically and mentally.

The are 3 requirements for swimming and water safety are that by the end of key stage 2 pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke

  • perform a safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

We make a commitment to our pupils that they swim for a whole year in Year 5, to achieve their Swimming Proficiency & Safety Award, which they are always very proud of and provides them with the ability to further their swimming if they choose to, but most importantly, are safe and confident around water.
